His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman

0 comments Posted by miles0282 at 6:58 PM

I finished reading Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. I came across this book years ago when I was in College. I love reading young adult novels so I always wonder in that section of the bookstore when I am finished with the art and horror sections. The design cover attracted me. It somehow reminded me of a book I read in my primary years about a life of a cat. I didn't really buy the book since it cost php 600+ then.

Years after...me and my sister watched the Golden Compass movie. The movie for me sucked (well except for the nice special effects and superb visuals) because the plot and pacing was too fast. I couldn't quite grasp the characters and the settings. I wanted more. I fell like that there more to it... as my friend Lelit would say "Do not judge a book by its movie." I went to the bookstore found that it's only php 300 per book I immediately bought the three books. I spent the Holidays reading the three books.

His Dark Materials, a trilogy of fantasy novels by Philip Pullman, comprises Northern Lights (1995 — released as The Golden Compass in North America), The Subtle Knife (1997) and The Amber Spyglass (2000). The trilogy follows the coming of age of two children, Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry, as they wander through a series of parallel universes against a backdrop of epic events. The story involves fantasy elements such as witches and armoured polar bears, but alludes to a broad range of ideas from fields such as physics, philosophy, and theology.

This series is kinda controversial since with its atheistic undertones and its subtle attack on the church's customs and traditions. Conservative Christians are somewhat appalled since it is for young adults. For me its good read and definitely just FICTION. My faith is not that weak to falter with a bunch of fictional books. hehehe
